There is always an explosive “fire triangle”: the Ignition Source or Spark, the Fuel, and the Oxygen. The 3 elements contained in the “fire triangle” are always required, to support the fire. This article is focusing on explosion proof enclosures.
There is most important that the volume ratio of the fuel to the oxygen must be limited between the fuel’s explosive usual limits and the ignition source, which will discharge the necessary energy, to set fire to the explosive fusion. By removing all these three elements, you will eliminate the potential explosion risk.
The general way to eliminate all the ignition sources from the potential risky site is to utilize explosion proof enclosures. An enclosure that is accredited international as explosion proof for a potential hazard, must very strong, to withstand all the inner pressure that might accumulate and could generate an explosion.
An explosion proof enclosure will have to be made properly, to vent the hot gases resulting after the procedure in such a way that, the arrangement would be cooled under the risky ignition temperature, in case there is a risky gas in the system.
All these explosive proof enclosures are created either from some cast aluminum or some heavy cast steel and, to cool all the resulting gases the projected enclosures will need to have some very wide flanges that will need to be grounded to a finish and a very good tolerance.
The explosion proof enclosures with the threaded covers would produce similar effect by the virtue of the narrow and long path that is through the threads. Whilst the hot gases from the potential internal explosion will go through all these narrow and long tubes, these things will quit all the heat to the actual metal and the pressure is much reduced.
Do not forget to torque all the cover bolts at the recommended value. Also, do not forget that the flange surfaces have to be protected from the scratches, all the time.
The inappropriate torque or the damaged surfaces would facilitate all the hot resulting gases to flee and even ignite, if you are managing an extremely explosive environment outside the explosive proof enclosure.
All these explosion proof enclosures are usually present in each industry sub-domain. And each equipment would be listed and labeled for the normal utility in a specific environment as it is noted in the National Electrical Code or in the IEC Standards. It is advisable to have adequate details and exposure for electrical products of your choice.
