The days of your computer running lightning fast and problem free have come to an end. It’s become incredibly slow, it freezes often and it throws up random messages like blue screen stop error codes, DLL errors and countless other ones that you don’t know the meaning of. You decide that you’ve had enough and you want to buy a new computer. Sure this isn’t a bad idea but buying a new computer can be expensive. And in any case, a new PC won’t run like brand new for a long time.
This isn’t because they age and physically slow down over time. More often than not, it’s down to users pushing them over what they’re capable of handling. Serial down-loaders like to download and install programs like it’s Christmas, even if they will never ever use them. Applications use up masses amount of hard drive space and can slow your computer to a crawl. Hold your horses though, because there’s a right and wrong way to remove programs.
Bad uninstalls mean more problems for your PC to deal with such as invalid entries in your registry and useless or corrupt files. Invalid registry entries can cause countless issues including the highly irritating Unmountable Boot Volume Blue Screen! Resintalling Windows is a possible solution for slow computers, but it’s a bit of bother. You would have to backup all your files and then reinstall needed applications and updates again.
A better solution to keep your PC healthy and fast is through regular cleaning and tidying up. Perhaps not the answer you’re looking for since it requires a bit of work, but it doesn’t take long. It’s also a far better choice than experiencing computer crashes and Blue Screen Error Codes. Here are some of the basics to get you started:
The first tip might be obvious but stop adding programs to your PC that aren’t going to be used. With so many free applications on the Net, you might get addicted to adding new ones to your computer, but don’t. Count how many programs you actually use in your Programs folder. You’ll probably come across programs that you didn’t even know that were on your PC.
Make a list of unused programs and delete them one after the other. Do this properly by using the Remove Programs utility in Control Panel. Delete any old files and folders that you don’t need anymore. Mp3s, videos and photos can use up masses of space and can easily be transferred to an external hard drive. Freeing up space on your hard drive is easy to do and will increase your PCs speed.
Cleanup temporary files and defrag your computer on a regular basis to free up more space and make programs run faster. Check that you don’t have lots of unnecessary applications running on startup. You can usually right-click on application icons in the toolbar and uncheck Autostart in Options. Be sure to leave essential things running such as antivirus programs. For users who are a little more confident in making changes you can uncheck any startup applications using the msconfig command. Doing this will help speed up your startup and shutdown times.
Finally, it’s vital that you have an antivirus program installed and that you scan your PC frequently. Millions of PC’s around the world are infected with viruses without their users even knowing. Bots, Trojans, viruses and malware can render your PC useless and even steal personal data. Start maintaining your PC today and you can experience a faster and more secure experience.
